Timothy Crump's Ward by Horatio Alger, Jr.

On the wintry outskirts of New York, the Crump family battles poverty, unpaid rent, and the daily strain of keeping faith when work is scarce and winter seems endless. Timothy Crump, a hardworking cooper, returns home with little hope of immediate employment, while his gentle wife Mary steadies the household against the bitterness of Aunt Rachel, whose complaints and suspicions turn every hardship into a quarrel. Yet even in their cramped, uneasy home, small mercies matter: Jack earns a quarter holding horses, a simple supper is shared, and the family clings to honesty, thrift, and endurance as the year turns under the shadow of eviction. This vivid domestic world grows more complicated when a baby is left on the doorstep and later when Ida, a frightened girl trapped under Peg's cruel control, enters the story. Ida's refusal to pass counterfeit money reveals her conscience, even as Peg and Dick punish her for doing right. With warmth, humor, and sharp social realism, the novel traces the clash between kindness and cruelty, showing how dignity survives amid deception, scarcity, and hard choices.
