When the Atlantic Stilled by John S Klock

In the heart of West Africa, a storm brews, not only in the skies but in the soul of a nation. Set against the lush rainforests, winding rivers, and shimmering beaches of Liberia, When the Atlantic Stilled is a sweeping tale of love, loss, resilience, and hope in a world transformed by climate catastrophe.

When the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) collapses, Liberia is thrust into chaos. Seasons unravel. Crops fail. Fisheries vanish. Disease spreads with the rains. As the world's leading climate scientists struggle to understand the breakdown of this vital ocean current, ordinary Liberians find themselves bearing the weight of a crisis not of their own making.

Yet amid the devastation, hope endures. A devoted pastor fights to feed his starving community. An aging healer known as Mamma shelters the vulnerable and tends the sick. In the bush, Charles Saye, a respected forest ranger, stands between his people and the violence gathering around them. Along the coast, a fisherman forms an extraordinary bond with lost and ailing whales in the deepening silence of the Atlantic. Deep in the backcountry of northwestern Liberia, two former Peace Corps volunteers become unlikely guardians of a vanishing wilderness. And at the heart of it all are Richard and Musu, bound by love and a shared devotion to conservation, risking everything to protect the wildlife and forests they cherish as the world around them unravels.

But this is more than a story of climate change. It is a tribute to Liberia's rainforests and rivers, its coastlines and creatures, and to the unyielding spirit of its people. When the Atlantic Stilled is a haunting and lyrical novel about what we stand to lose, what we must fight to save, and the enduring power of community when the world itself begins to change.
