They Didn't Stop Me — The Sixteen-Year Killing Career That American Healthcare Made Possible by Thomas Ledlie

In June 1988, a New Jersey judge died in a hospital bed. The nurse who killed him went home, slept, and returned for his next shift. For sixteen years, across ten facilities in two states, Charles Edmund Cullen administered lethal doses of digoxin, insulin, and epinephrine to patients who had done nothing except trust the institutions that employed him. He confessed to forty murders. Forensic analysis suggests the true number may exceed three hundred.

They Didn't Stop Me is not a book about a monster. It is a book about the system that made him possible. With the precision of a forensic investigation and the moral seriousness the subject demands, Thomas Ledlie reconstructs every institutional decision that kept Cullen moving: the neutral employment references negotiated in exchange for quiet departures, the internal investigations that asked the wrong questions, the absent credentialing database, the Poison Control director whose warning went unheeded for three months, the seven nurses whose report to the District Attorney was closed without charges.

This is the story of what American healthcare was built to protect, and what it was not built to see. It is a reckoning with systemic failure at its most lethal — and an urgent argument that we owe the dead more than we have yet delivered.
