Little Sunshine's Holiday by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik

Little Sunshine, or Sunny, is a truth-loving, affectionate child whose sunny temper and sharp little opinions make every moment feel alive. When her parents take a rare holiday to Scotland, she greets the journey as a grand adventure, helping pack, admiring her new traveling clothes, and trying to make sense of trains, crowds, engines, and the grown-up world around her. Even the smallest things—a pear, a lamb in a field, a bath in a washing-tub, a beloved apron at sleep time—become occasions for wonder, pride, or wounded feeling. In Scotland, Sunny finds herself in a warm country cottage, then in a Highland landscape of lochs, mountains, hidden canals, wild geese, water-lilies, and fruit-laden trees. She delights in boats, nuts, apples, grapes, and the strange freedom of the glen, while learning, with good humor, when "No" really means no. Around her, the holiday becomes a portrait of family life: affectionate relatives, nursery comforts, lively children, a parrot, terriers, and the easy mix of play, care, illness, mischief, and tenderness that shapes this bright, natural world.
