Prophets of Democracy by T. Walter Herbert

Two prophets of democracy, one a wealthy New Yorker and the other an Apache leader, confronted the injustices of imperial conquest. Their resistance reveals the deep moral contradictions of American expansion and inspires the ongoing struggle for democratic rights.

Prophets of Democracy explores the intertwined lives of Herman Melville and Nochaydelklinne, highlighting the shared commitment to human dignity that set them at odds with the pursuit of America's imperial ambitions. Melville, raised in privilege, became a voice against the exploitation he witnessed during his whaling voyages, recognizing the hypocrisy of a nation that proclaimed liberty while oppressing indigenous peoples. In contrast, Nochaydelklinne, a leader of the Apache community, faced the brutal realities of dispossession as his people were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands.

The narrative delves into the moral complexities of U.S. expansionism, revealing how figures like President Ulysses Grant justified the violent seizure of land under the guise of benevolence. General George Crook's secret mutiny against inhumane orders underscores the internal conflicts faced by those tasked with enforcing these policies. Melville's literary works, particularly Billy Budd, serve as a lens through which the reader can examine the ethical dilemmas of authority and justice at stake in frontier conquest.

The book also addresses the spiritual dimensions of resistance, illustrating how both Melville and Nochaydelklinne invoked a bedrock moral law to challenge the status quo. Their legacies resonate today, offering insights into the ongoing struggles for indigenous rights and the quest for a more equitable society. Prophets of Democracy ultimately serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring fight for dignity and the necessity of confronting historical injustices to forge a path toward true democracy.
