Rico and Wiseli by Johanna Spyri

In the quiet mountain village of Sils Maria, a reserved Italian laborer and his dreamy young son Rico live apart from the rest of the community, bound together by music, silence, and a tenderness shadowed by absence. Rico's inward, longing nature draws him toward distant places he has never known, while across the path Stineli, a cheerful and capable girl burdened by family duties, becomes his closest companion. Their friendship deepens through walks, prayers, schooldays, and shared wonder at the spring landscape and the far-off lake, giving the story its tender, melancholy heart. When Rico longs for a fiddle, Stineli tries to help him, only for the teacher to reveal how impossible the dream seems. Yet Rico's hidden musical gift and Stineli's steadfast kindness keep hope alive, even as the boy's homesickness grows. A summer outing, a devastating death, and Rico's sense that he belongs nowhere turn the tale toward grief and spiritual need. In the Menotti household, Stineli's warmth brings comfort and joy, especially to the sick little Silvio, but darkness returns with Rico's despair. Through prayer and faith, Stineli tries to guide him toward a home beyond sorrow, while the family's buried troubles begin to surface.
