Poor Relations by Compton MacKenzie

Poor Relations follows John Touchwood, a witty but self-dramatizing playwright whose life is thrown into comic confusion by success, gossip, and the demands of family. On the Atlantic crossing home from New York, he basks in theatrical triumphs, rereads affectionate and exasperating letters from relatives, and falls into a flirtation with the reserved Miss Hamilton and her sharp companion Miss Merritt. What begins as an amused, romantic voyage soon exposes the gap between John's public charm and private vulnerability. Back in London, the novel widens into a sharp social comedy of households, ambitions, and reputations. John's visit to the Hamiltons reveals the tension between elegant Doris Hamilton and her vivid, meddling mother, Mrs. Hamilton, while hints of scandal begin to circulate around him. As gossip threatens both his standing and his new attachments, he rushes to confront Janet Bond, the stern, celebrated actress who insists his Joan of Arc play cannot proceed unless his moral reputation is cleared. When the truth proves more tangled than he imagined, involving his brother Hugh and Doris rather than the rumors he feared, John is left to navigate vanity, protectiveness, and the absurdities of modern life.
