Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by D. H. Lawrence

In Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious, D. H. Lawrence mounts a fierce challenge to Freud and Jung, treating psychoanalysis not as a neutral therapy but as a worldview with dangerous moral consequences. He probes the struggle between instinct and ethics, the mystery of the unconscious, and the hidden forces shaping love, family, and selfhood, arguing for a "true" unconscious that is creative and life-giving rather than pathological. Lawrence attacks the Freudian tendency to reduce the psyche to sexual repression, incestuous desire, and disorder, insisting that psychoanalysis confuses symptoms with the deeper source of human being. He questions whether incest desire is a natural instinct or a corruption produced by thought itself, and he traces the emergence of consciousness as a pivotal turning point in human life. Along the way, he reflects on the child's bond with the mother and on the painful divide between lover and beloved, presenting love as a field of longing, sacrifice, and moral tension.
