Neddie and Beckie Stubtail by Howard Roger Garis

Neddie and Beckie Stubtail live in a cozy cave-house on a hill with their lively bear family, where Uncle Wigwag, Aunt Piffy, and Mr. Whitewash keep every day full of warmth, teasing, and gentle surprises. Their world is one of schooldays, honey hunts, snowy pranks, and small woodland dangers, all told with playful humor and a comforting sense that family will always make things right. From the first mishap, when the siblings get trapped in a hollow log while trying to remind their father to bring home honey, to the bee-sting lesson that leaves Neddie with a swollen nose and a promise to leave bees alone, each adventure mixes comedy with a child-sized dose of suspense. Beckie proves just as brave as her brother, outwitting cruel bears, escaping a bad one with a sewing needle, and surviving a trickster's scheme with quick thinking and luck. Uncle Wigwag's jokes, the children's curiosity, and the contrast between kind bears and mean ones give these stories their charm, ending in laughter, lessons, and affectionate family chaos.
