Mrs. Peter Rabbit by Thornton W. Burgess

Restless in the safety of the Old Briar-patch, Peter Rabbit discovers that comfort means little without companionship, and the longing for friends sends him impulsively into the wider world. His moonlit journey to the Old Pasture quickly turns perilous when Hooty the Owl tears his coat and leaves him shaken, sore, and wiser about the need to watch both the sky and his own impulsive heart. In the unfamiliar pasture, Peter finds beauty, mystery, and brief comfort in the briars, the sun, and the quiet music of the Green Meadows, but he also notices strange rabbit tracks and wonders who else may claim this new home. As curiosity leads him deeper, Peter encounters the interest of little Miss Fuzzytail, whose hidden kindness and gifts of sweet clover begin to soften his loneliness. Her gentle attention, and Peter's growing affection for her, make him self-conscious about his ragged appearance, so he takes care to wash, brush, and mend himself as best he can. Meanwhile, Old Jed Thumper rages and hunts in vain, distracted by false signs and phantom thumps. Through danger, discovery, and the first stirrings of love, Peter learns gratitude, caution, and the quiet power of friendship.
