The Archive of Second Skies by Jaffer Sadiq

In the coastal city of Miral, every person carries two skies: the one above their head, and the one made of unlived lives. Beneath the abandoned Al-Noor Observatory lies a secret vault — the Archive of Second Skies — where forgotten futures drift like weather. Ilyas Anani, a quiet municipal archivist, has spent years tending to these fragile skies. But when Layla Karrim, a marine biologist who “smells like actual sea,” walks into the archive carrying her grandfather’s hidden logbooks, her second sky begins to fracture. Dreams vanish. Birds fall from her sky. And the green comet her grandfather once drew for her dims. Together, Layla and Ilyas descend into the vault to confront the collapsing sky — and the unsaid things that threaten to erase her future. Blending magical realism, emotional depth, and atmospheric worldbuilding, The Archive of Second Skies is a novel about memory, unlived lives, and the courage to face the truths we bury. For readers who love stories that feel like weather, this novel asks: What happens when the life you never lived begins to disappear?
