The First Weekend: Long Distance Caregiving for Adult Children by Rowan Hulia

The phone rings. A parent fell. There was a hospital visit, a missed medication, a strange conversation with a neighbor, or a message that suddenly makes an old worry feel immediate. You live an hour away, or a flight away, and you are still sitting at your own kitchen table.

What do you do first?

The First Weekend is a practical guide to the 48 to 72 hours after a scare when you cannot be there immediately. It helps adult children stabilize the next twelve hours, find a reliable person on the ground, get usable information from hospitals and clinics, handle privacy barriers, decide whether to travel, and make a short visit count.

You will learn what to ask in the first five minutes of a phone call, what to photograph and gather in the house, what to leave untouched, how to think about a same-day flight without turning travel into a moral test, and how to leave behind a simple human relay instead of a pile of promises. You will also learn how to talk with a parent without turning concern into control.

The goal is not to build a complete caregiving system this weekend. It is to replace free fall with a clear sequence, then go home with facts, a few reliable connections, and a realistic next step.

Read it before you need it, or open it the moment the call comes.
