Lae and the crew of the Iroij-Lik have completed the crossing they once thought impossible. They have left their dying coral atoll behind and reached the high islands of what we now call French Polynesia.

But arriving is only the beginning.

On this new shore, Lae discovers that navigation means more than reading currents, stars and the hull beneath her hands. She must learn the knowledge of people who have lived with this ocean for generations — people whose understanding of the land, the water, the dead and the spaces between them cannot simply be translated into words.

As the crew settles into their unfamiliar world, Lae begins to sense a current beneath the lagoon: a current carrying memory, drawing them onward towards a distant shore.
