In the House of False Causes by Philip Golabuk

This is the story of a middle-aged writer, Harry, who moves to the southern town of Acacia to finish a stalled novel about two lovers badly wounded during the Vietnam War. After becoming involved with a sociopathic neighbor and the neighbor's lover, Harry finds himself lost in a maze of maddening deceptions and manipulations until intrusive memories of his boyhood summers spent at a boardwalk carnival show him the way out. In the House of False Causes is a gripping psychological and philosophical thriller that explores the prolific fluidity of time and meaning, the self-destructive consequences of narcissism, and the power of love to revise outcomes and grant seemingly impossible second chances.
