Aunt Jane's Nieces Out West by L. Frank Baum

In sunny Southern California, Beth de Graf, her lively cousin Patsy Doyle, and their generous guardian Uncle John Merrick are swept from a quiet morning into the strange new world of motion pictures. What begins as a shocking "disaster" in a staged film shoot becomes a lively debate about movie-making, public taste, and the hidden power of this fast-growing art, as Beth bristles at being used as an unwitting extra and Patsy delights in the spectacle. When producer Otis Werner explains the carefully designed "falling wall" picture and its moral warning about unsafe buildings and neglected workers, the family is forced to reconsider what films can do. Set against the rise of Hollywood as a production center, the story expands into a warm family comedy of wealth, charity, and curiosity, with reunions, new acquaintances, and playful banter. Beth and Patsy then reveal their bold dream of creating wholesome children's theaters, only to confront the harsh economics of film trusts, exchanges, and production costs. Just when the plan seems impossible, the mysterious A. Jones offers an astonishing alternative that could turn their idealistic scheme into reality.
