Watch on the Ridge by A. R. Shaw

They earned one good summer. The Authority came to collect it.

After a brutal winter, Kettle Falls is alive again. The orchards are heavy with fruit, the sawmill is running, and the people who chose one another have built something that looks dangerously like freedom.

Then survey crews appear on the western road.

Darren Voss recognizes the painted marks for what they are: not measurements, but claims. Soon armed officers arrive with an official demand. Kettle Falls must surrender one of its own—or pay restitution for the homes, fields, timber, and labor its people used to survive.

Every order sounds reasonable. Every notice bears a seal. Together, they amount to occupation.

As the district tightens its hold, a familiar voice begins speaking through the community's radio, fire climbs the ridge, and a locked gate rises across the only road home. Beyond it, Travis Gray searches Ridgeline for proof that the demand was never about restitution. Inside a labor camp, a woman with nothing left to lose holds the one piece of information that could expose the truth.

Kettle Falls has survived hunger, cold, and isolation. Now its people must decide whether a community can remain free when freedom itself has been declared a debt.

Because the Authority does not need to destroy what they built. It only needs to make keeping it illegal.

Watch on the Ridge is Book Four in The Last Safe County, a character-driven post-apocalyptic survival series about family, community, and the price of remaining free. The series is best read in order.
