The Stone Shore by A Jay

A forgotten record. A dying island. A navigator who discovers that the knowledge she came looking for has been waiting for her all along.

When Lae reaches Te Pito o te Henua after eighteen months of travel, she expects to find knowledge that might help her people.

Instead, she finds an island struggling to survive its own past.

The forests that once held the soil are gone. The great stone ancestors remain, but many of the figures in the ancient quarry were abandoned unfinished. The teaching house still carries an enormous record carved into its walls, but the last person capable of fully reading it died generations ago.

The knowledge remains.

The readers are gone.

Then Fetia recognises the marks.

What her family believed were decorations are connected to the ancient writing of Te Pito. A woman named Hine once carried part of that knowledge toward the sun-down, where it was preserved through generations without its keepers fully understanding what they possessed.

Now the two halves are beginning to meet.

Hotu has preserved the ancient marks.
Kura has preserved the spoken land record.
Miru has carried its practical knowledge in the making of boats.
Vai has protected the seeds of trees that disappeared from the island.
And Soru, only nine years old, begins learning how to read the wounded ground beneath his hands.

But Lae discovers that recovering knowledge is not simply a matter of finding it. She has arrived with the urgency of someone whose own people are waiting for her, and she must learn to respect an island whose knowledge has survived precisely because its people have learned when to give, when to wait and when to say no.

Slowly, the broken pieces begin to join.

The ancient record becomes readable.

The first seeds are planted.

Two estranged brothers find a way to share what each has carried.

And an ancient navigation chart reveals a final instruction: one side has been waiting for a navigator who has never yet made the journey.

Lae will.
