Ann Mills: Secret Sailor of the Maidstone by Hilmarj Torgrim

History remembers Ann Mills holding a cutlass in one hand and the severed head of a Frenchman in the other. Almost everything that happened before and after that moment has been lost.

Born sometime in the early eighteenth century, Ann Mills vanished into one of the most dangerous occupations available to anyone of her generation. Disguised as a man, she went to sea and became what a later account called a "common sailor" aboard the Maidstone. There was nothing common about what she accomplished.

In Ann Mills: Secret Sailor of the Maidstone, the fragments of Ann's real history become the foundation for a sweeping but carefully researched adventure through the waterfronts, merchant ships, and warships of eighteenth-century Britain. Ann learns early that the same labor valued in a man can be dismissed in a woman. What begins as a practical experiment in male clothing gradually opens a world previously closed to her. As John "Jack" Mills, she earns better wages, learns the unforgiving work of the sea, and eventually enters the King's service aboard the formidable HMS Maidstone.

There, among hundreds of sailors living under rigid discipline and the constant threat of war, Ann must do far more than conceal her identity. She must become a sailor. She learns the ropes, survives the guns, earns the respect of her messmates, and discovers that competence offers a kind of freedom she has never known ashore. But Britain is at war with France, and anonymity cannot protect her forever.

When Maidstone meets the enemy, Ann's skill and courage carry her into brutal close combat. One bloody encounter will become the foundation of a legend, transforming an ordinary sailor into the woman later depicted carrying a Frenchman's severed head. Yet the story remembered by history is not necessarily the story Ann lived.

Drawing carefully upon the surviving evidence while using historically grounded fiction to reconstruct the enormous gaps in Ann's biography, Ann Mills: Secret Sailor of the Maidstone follows her from an imagined working-class childhood through maritime employment, naval warfare, discovery, and the uncertain years after she disappears from the historical record. It also follows something Ann herself could never control: the transformation of a real female sailor into a legendary "female pirate."

This is a story about disguise, survival, war, work, friendship, and the strange machinery of historical memory. It asks not merely whether Ann Mills really held a severed head, but how a working sailor whose real life was almost entirely forgotten became one of the most striking women in maritime legend.

The novel concludes with a factual timeline of the real Ann Mills, separating documented evidence, historical inference, and later legend to help dispel the myths that have accumulated around her for more than two centuries.
