The Museum He Wasn't Supposed to Save by Ibrahim Adama

Julian Ashford-Pike has spent his whole career quietly cleaning up after his family's empire — closing deals, managing "special situations," making inconvenient things disappear before his father has to notice them. His newest assignment should be simple: convince the last holdout on a Queens redevelopment site to take the buyout and go quietly.

Instead, the holdout is Elena Marchetti — the museum curator he fell for three years ago during two unforgettable weeks that ended the moment he decided, without ever telling her why, that loving her seriously would only get her hurt the way his family hurts everyone it touches.

Elena has spent three years building her entire life around the Ravenswood Historical Society, the small waterfront museum her late grandmother helped found — and around the conviction that she was never quite serious enough for the man who vanished from her life without explanation. Now his family wants to demolish the one place she has left of her grandmother, and he's the man they sent to close the deal.

But the deeper Julian looks into the museum his father wants gone, the more he finds he never expected — including a secret, decades-old thread connecting his own late mother to these same walls, and a truth about what she gave up to keep the peace that Julian refuses to repeat. As a city landmarks hearing counts down the weeks toward a final verdict, and his father tries to marry him off in one last convenient arrangement, Julian has to decide whether he's willing to lose everything his family ever gave him — to keep, freely and out loud, the one thing they never priced correctly to begin with.

The Museum He Wasn't Supposed to Save is the final book in Fortunes Freely Given, a series about what a family's oldest fortune is actually worth once everyone in it finally learns to give love the way it was always supposed to be given: freely, and without a ledger attached.
