THE CAPITAL SCHISM by Kevin Stüber

What happens when the institution established by Christ appears to be in conflict with the actions of those entrusted to protect it? For centuries, the Catholic Church has looked to the Chair of Peter as a visible sign of unity, stability, and fidelity to the apostolic faith. Yet in the modern era, many Catholics have found themselves confronting a painful and unsettling question: how can one remain faithful to the Papacy while honestly acknowledging moments when those who occupy that sacred office appear to depart from the very traditions they are called to preserve? The Capital Schism explores one of the most profound crises facing Catholic identity today: the tension between the enduring institution of the Papacy and the human weakness of the men who exercise its authority. With theological depth and historical analysis, this book examines the crucial distinction between the office Christ established and the individual who sits upon the Chair of Peter. Tracing the roots of the modern ecclesial crisis, this work examines the impact of post-conciliar developments, the struggle over Tradition, the transformation of Catholic formation, the rise of synodality, and the growing divide between inherited doctrine and contemporary approaches to Church governance. Through Scripture, theology, canon law, and Church history, The Capital Schism investigates the limits of obedience, the meaning of legitimate resistance, and the responsibility of Catholics when conscience encounters a serious conflict between authority and truth. It explores historical examples of faithful correction within the Church and examines how previous generations endured periods of confusion while remaining anchored in the promises of Christ. This is not a book about abandoning the Church. It is a call to deeper fidelity. It is written for Catholics who love the Church but struggle to understand the turmoil of the present age; for those seeking clarity amid theological confusion; for readers who desire to reconcile loyalty to the Chair of Peter with unwavering commitment to Catholic Tradition. The central question of this book is not whether the Church can survive human weakness. History has already answered that question. The question is whether Catholics today can remain faithful when the storm reaches the very places where they once expected the greatest certainty. The Papacy remains Christ’s gift to His Church. The challenge is understanding how to remain faithful to that gift when human beings entrusted with it fall short.
