Synthetic Men of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Synthetic Men of Mars is the ninth novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s celebrated Barsoom series, transporting readers once again to the dying world of Mars. The story follows Ulysses Paxton, a human adventurer who has become a prominent figure on Barsoom, as he confronts a terrifying threat involving artificial life and a deadly scientific experiment. Paxton travels to the isolated region of Okar in search of help for the mysterious illness afflicting Raja K'and. His quest leads him into the domain of the brilliant but ruthless scientist Ras Thavas, whose experiments have produced artificial beings known as the synthetic men. These creatures, created through disturbing scientific processes, become central to a dangerous struggle involving ambition, power, and scientific control. Burroughs combines swordplay, romance, Martian warfare, bizarre creatures, futuristic science, and perilous journeys into another fast-paced planetary adventure. The novel explores the consequences of scientific experimentation while maintaining the action-driven style that defines the Barsoom saga. With its imaginative world-building, strange inventions, heroic characters, and relentless adventure, Synthetic Men of Mars is a classic example of early planetary science fiction and a memorable chapter in the Barsoom series.
