Katharine Von Bora by Armin Stein

Katharine von Bora emerges here not as a legend, but as a living woman shaped by faith, fear, tenderness, and resolve. From the dim enclosure of Nimptschen convent, where she and Elizabeth von Kanitz begin to question monastic vows under Luther's influence, to the perilous secret that leads nine nuns toward escape, her story becomes a dramatic portrait of conscience awakening against rigid authority. When their plot is exposed, punished, and threatened with ruin, help finally comes through Luther's daring intervention and the courage of Leonhard Koppe, whose wagon carries the women toward freedom. The book then widens into the domestic world Katharine helps build: a household tested by plague, grief, and separation, yet sustained by prayer, hospitality, and steadfast love. In scenes of springtime peace, a child's death, a new birth, and Luther's long absence at Coburg, Katharine's quiet heroism shines. She is shown as Luther's faithful helpmeet, a woman whose humility, endurance, and devotion give human warmth to the Reformation's public triumphs.
