Museum of Misplacement by PAWAN BHATIA

Museum of Misplacement is a genre‑defying work that presents itself as a catalogue of seven exhibits, each exploring a different facet of the human condition: the feeling of not quite belonging anywhere, in any time, or to any identity. Written by Pawan Bhatia, the book blends prose, poetry, allegory, satire, and marginalia to create an immersive experience that is part philosophical meditation, part absurdist comedy, and part tender confession.

The journey begins in The Waiting Room, where time is meaningless and all visitors sit in chairs facing broken clocks, waiting for numbers that never come—a metaphor for the existential suspension we all inhabit. Passports of Irony examines identity as a bureaucratic performance, showing how documents that claim to prove who we are simultaneously erase us. Layover Earth reimagines the planet as an infinite airport terminal where humanity is permanently delayed cargo, sipping cold coffee and watching departure boards that never change.

The Bureaucracy of Stars extends the satire to the cosmos itself, portraying the universe as an understaffed office where even black holes need permits and creation was just a misfiled form. The Archive of Rumors treats "home" as a folk tale rather than a place—an unverifiable story we tell ourselves to survive. The Gift Shop of Belonging exposes how we commodify our own displacement, buying keychains and snowglobes that promise connection but deliver only the shape of it. Finally, Exit Through the Cosmic Gate presents the ultimate choice: laughter or tears—or both—as the only honest response to the absurdity of existence.

Throughout, Bhatia insists that displacement is not a problem to be solved but a condition to be inhabited. Each exhibit follows a six‑part structure—placard, monologue, micro‑allegory, poetic interludes, footnotes, and a curator's note—creating a rhythm that feels both ritualistic and intimate. The book refuses easy resolution; the final gate does not lead home but to the act of choosing itself. The curator's voice is wry, weary, and unexpectedly tender, acknowledging that while the museum is a confession and an accusation, it is also a love letter to the displaced.

Ultimately, Museum of Misplacement argues that home is not a destination but a choice—the choice to laugh or weep, to accept or resist, to belong or wander. It is a mirror held up to every reader, inviting them to recognize themselves in its halls and to walk through the final gate carrying nothing but their own decision.
