The Knights Templar by Murat Smith

The Knights Templar were warrior-monks, landlords, logisticians, diplomats and custodians of wealth. Founded in the crusading world of the early twelfth century, they built an institution that connected frontier castles with farms, churches and financial offices across Europe. Their dramatic destruction after the French arrests of 1307 later produced legends of secret knowledge, buried treasure and mysterious survival. The Knights Templar: Faith, War, Wealth and the Fall of a Crusading Order reconstructs the order without romance or caricature. It explains the Latin East that created the need for military religious orders, the Templar Rule, recruitment and discipline, the realities of horses and fortifications, relations with Muslim and Christian powers, the loss of Acre, royal debt, interrogation, papal commissions and the Council of Vienne. Richly illustrated with verified public-domain and CC0 historical material, the book also teaches readers how seals, charters, trial records, architecture and later legend must be interpreted. It is a serious, accessible history of faith, power, violence, administration and memory.
