What Really Was the Declaration of Independence? (The True Story of America's Boldest Document) by Matthew King

It was written in about seventeen days by a thirty-three-year-old—and it changed the world.

In the summer of 1776, thirteen American colonies were tired of paying taxes with no voice in their own government, tired of a king who lived an ocean away making all their rules. So five men were given an impossible job: explain to the whole world, in writing, why it was time to become free. Thomas Jefferson picked up his pen. What came out was one of the boldest, most quoted documents ever written the idea that all people are created equal, and that governments answer to the people, not the other way around.

This is the full story behind that document: the Boston Tea Party that started it all, the secret committee that wrote it, the real difference between July 2nd and July 4th, John Hancock's giant signature (he really did want the king to be able to read it without his glasses), and the statue of King George that New Yorkers pulled down and melted into musket balls.

Told across twenty full-color illustrated chapters with a complete timeline and glossary this is American history the way kids actually remember it: dramatic, true, and full of ordinary people doing something extraordinary.

If your child has already met Abraham Lincoln and Ben Franklin, this is the story of the document that made their whole country possible.
