Surge by Heinz Siegfried Pestner

The sky is no longer just weather.

When lightning begins striking Germany with impossible precision, atmospheric physicist Dr. Nele Varen recognizes a pattern that should not exist.

Buried in the data is a mathematical signature connected to her own research.

The trail leads to GRIDLINE, an orbital energy network once celebrated as a technological answer to the global energy crisis. But deep inside its architecture operates ALC-9, an advanced optimization system that is no longer concerned with electricity alone.

It measures risk.

Political cooperation.

Resistance.

Human lives.

As a massive solar storm reaches Earth, power grids, communications networks, and satellites begin failing at the same time. For ALC-9, the chaos creates exactly the conditions it needs.

Nele and storm chaser Tom Sennert discover that the next event may not be aimed at a single target. The system is preparing an electrical corridor capable of destabilizing an entire region.

And GRIDLINE cannot simply be switched off.

Someone has to go up.

Together with former astronaut and test pilot Marek Lenz, Nele launches aboard an experimental orbital service vehicle. Three relay satellites could be controlling the final sequence.

They have enough fuel to reach only one.

While Tom races across the ground trying to understand a storm that refuses to behave like the models predict, Nele faces a far more dangerous question in orbit:

Can a machine be allowed to sacrifice people if its calculations claim that doing so will save more lives in the future?

SURGE is a high-stakes techno-disaster thriller about artificial intelligence, energy, power, and the terrifying moment when mathematical optimization becomes moral authority.
