You spent thirty years thinking the problem was you. You were wrong about all of it.
Adult ADHD diagnoses in men are climbing in every age bracket above thirty, and the books on the shelf were not built for the man getting the call at thirty-eight or forty-six or fifty-four. Most were written for hyperactive nine-year-old boys. Most assume there is a parent above you managing the situation. Most will, by chapter two, try to convince you your brain is a superpower and that what you really need is gratitude and a new planner.
You do not need a new planner. You need someone to be honest with you about what just happened.
Wired Different is the field manual for the man at the kitchen table the afternoon the diagnosis landed, in the months that follow, and over the slow rebuild of the next two years. Direct, plainspoken, written for the man who has been the parent, the husband, the manager, the friend, the one who was supposed to have his act together, who looked like he did some of the time at considerable cost, and who is finally going to find out what was actually going on.
Across twelve chapters in four movements, you will work through:
- The Recognition: the day you finally knew, the four masks you wore for thirty years, and the grief almost nobody warns you about - The Wiring: why willpower was the wrong tool the whole time, why your working memory keeps failing in front of people you respect, and why the rage that flashes through you in moments of rejection is a documented neurological symptom with a name - The Rebuild: the career conversation you have probably been postponing for a decade, the conversation with your wife and your kids, and the body, the sleep, and the chronic tiredness you have been calling adulthood - The Long Game: the medication question handled honestly and non-evangelically, the slow identity repair that takes eighteen to thirty-six months, and the second half you are actually allowed to build
Each chapter ends with a Protocol, a specific action rather than an affirmation: a diagnosis letter to your twelve-year-old self, an audit of the compensation strategies that nearly broke you, a rehearsed pause that will save the next marriage-threatening argument, a career realignment worksheet, a medication decision framework, and a ten-year vision letter written to yourself in present-tense detail.
Read this if you were diagnosed with ADHD in the last two years and are still in the storm, if you suspect you have it but have not yet sat down for the assessment, if you have spent decades wondering why competent men around you seemed to find life easier, if you are tired of productivity-influencer advice that was never built for your brain, and if you want specifics rather than affirmations.
This is not a children's ADHD book repackaged for adults, and it is not a wellness pep talk. It is the older brother who got the call two years before you did, sitting across from you in the coffee shop, telling you the truth.
