From Snotty to Sub by Wolston B. C. W. Forester

This wartime naval memoir follows a young officer from his first appointment to a super-Dreadnought in the Grand Fleet through the hardening realities of service at sea. Framed as a sequel to an earlier account and shaped by a mother's affectionate foreword, it combines pride in naval tradition with intimate recollections gathered under wartime censorship, then plunges into the practical world of mess tables, drills, and the uneasy status of the "new boy." From the long journey north to his secret posting, to the camaraderie of the gunroom and the kindness and severity of commanders, the narrator captures both the comedy and discipline of life afloat. He recalls a picnic that ends in tragedy, a spell of illness and hospital recovery, and the strange relief of leave before returning to the fleet. Winter brings fog, storms, boredom, and absurd mishaps, but also theatrical entertainments and moments of fierce solidarity. Against this backdrop, the book builds to the violence of battle: shellfire, smoke, damaged ships, close-range duels with German dreadnoughts, and the grim aftermath of damage and disappointment. Funny, humane, and unsparing, it offers a vivid portrait of naval life in wartime. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
