George Eliot's Life (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by George Eliot

These letters trace a vivid stretch of George Eliot's life, where travel, friendship, and intellectual curiosity move side by side. From France into Spain, she and George Henry Lewes appear as delighted companions, reading, walking, learning Spanish, and absorbing the sea, cities, and landscapes of Biarritz, Granada, Cordova, Seville, Madrid, and beyond. Her letters are full of sharp observation: Paris salons, Moorish echoes in Spanish architecture, moonlit views of the Alhambra, crowded inns, picture galleries, and the surprising warmth of a country often misunderstood. Alongside the journey runs the deeper story of her work. Eliot wrestles with the making and protection of The Spanish Gypsy, initially imagined as a drama, while also reflecting on Felix Holt, publishing, payment, and the strange afterlife of novels in circulation. Back in London and the country, she exchanges affectionate, thoughtful letters on illness, grief, friendship, women's education, Positivism, religion, and public life. Wry, disciplined, and deeply humane, she emerges as both artist and moral thinker, increasingly aware of mortality yet still animated by beauty, duty, and enduring creative purpose.
