Hermann and Dorothea (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Goethe's Hermann and Dorothea unfolds amid the upheaval of the French Revolution, where a prosperous Rhine town watches refugees pass by and measures public catastrophe against the quiet dignity of domestic life. From the opening scenes, the poem balances sympathy, social duty, and reflective debate: a doctor condemns idle curiosity, a pastor defends humane understanding, and the burdened procession of women, children, and the elderly reveals the misery of exile in vivid detail. Yet the town remains a place of shelter, wine, faith, and hope, where family security and ordinary virtue matter deeply. At the center is Hermann, a thoughtful young man stirred by compassion when he gives his family's provisions to a desperate refugee woman and her companions. His parents expect him to marry for practical advantage, but Hermann rejects selfish comfort and awkwardly endured courtship, insisting that true manhood shares joy and hardship alike. As his mother recognizes, he has already chosen the exile he encountered that morning. Their love grows out of danger, moral feeling, and the poem's larger vision of marriage, renewal, and steadfast human goodness.
