Guy Fawkes by William Harrison Ainsworth

William Harrison Ainsworth's Guy Fawkes, or The Gunpowder Treason is a sweeping historical romance shaped by political intrigue, religious conflict, and tragic passion. Set against the brutal anti-Catholic policies of James I, it exposes the persecution of recusants, especially in Lancashire, and follows the conspiracy from its secret beginnings to betrayal, imprisonment, trial, and execution. Ainsworth frames the novel with moral seriousness and a plea for toleration, while introducing figures such as Viviana Radcliffe, Catesby, Garnet, and Guy Fawkes as embodiments of loyalty, ambition, faith, and fanaticism. The story moves from hidden refuges like Ordsall Cave to the vaults beneath Parliament, where Fawkes and his companions labor to conceal powder, dig toward destruction, and fortify themselves with fervent prayers and hymns. Alongside the plot's public danger runs a painful romantic thread: Viviana's divided heart draws Humphrey Chetham into loyalty, sacrifice, and heartbreak, even as armed men close in. In the end, imprisonment and execution reveal the human cost of conspiracy, conscience, and state power. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
