Paying for College After the 2026 PLUS Loan Changes by Jordan Hale

The rules for paying for college with federal loans changed significantly in 2026. For many parents, graduate students, and professional students, that means a funding plan that once seemed dependable may no longer cover the full cost of school. Paying for College After the 2026 PLUS Loan Changes is a practical, plain-English guide to understanding the new federal student loan limits—and planning what to do when federal borrowing leaves a gap. Beginning July 1, 2026, major changes affect Parent PLUS loans and federal borrowing for many graduate and professional students. Parent PLUS borrowing is now subject to new annual and aggregate limits for families who do not qualify for the limited transition exception, while Grad PLUS loans are generally no longer available to new graduate and professional borrowers. If you were counting on federal loans to cover tuition, fees, housing, or other education costs, these changes deserve attention before the next financial aid offer or tuition bill arrives. Inside, you'll learn: • How the new 2026 Parent PLUS loan limits work • What the $20,000 annual Parent PLUS limit can mean for a family's college budget • How the $65,000 aggregate Parent PLUS limit applies to each dependent student • Why repaying previous Parent PLUS debt may not restore borrowing room under the new aggregate limit • What changed for Grad PLUS loans after July 1, 2026 • Who may qualify for the limited transition exception • How federal borrowing differs for graduate and professional students • How the new graduate and professional student loan limits can affect multi-year degree plans • Why families should calculate potential college funding gaps before committing to a school • How to review financial aid offers more carefully • How scholarships, grants, institutional aid, savings, income, payment plans, employer assistance, and other funding sources can fit into a broader college financing strategy • Questions to ask a college or university financial aid office before borrowing • How to compare financing options without focusing only on the monthly payment • Practical worksheets for estimating future college costs and identifying potential funding shortfalls This guide is especially useful for: Parents considering Parent PLUS loans Families paying for undergraduate education beginning in 2026 or later Graduate students researching federal student loan options Professional students preparing for high-cost degree programs Students comparing financial aid packages Families facing an unexpected college funding gap Borrowers who want a clearer explanation of the new federal loan rules The goal is not to tell you which school to attend or which financing option to choose. It is to help you understand what changed, identify the questions that matter, and approach one of life's biggest financial decisions with better information. Federal student aid rules, program classifications, and individual eligibility can change. Always verify important borrowing decisions with StudentAid.gov, current U.S. Department of Education guidance, and your school's financial aid office. If your college funding plan depended on Parent PLUS or Grad PLUS loans, this book will help you understand the new landscape before you decide what comes next.
