Ann Veronica: A Modern Love Story by H. G. Wells

First published in 1909, Ann Veronica is H. G. Wells's daring story of a young woman who refuses to be told what her life should be. When her father forbids her a small evening of freedom, twenty-one-year-old Ann Veronica Stanley walks out of her suburban home and into London — to study science, to earn her own living, and to join the fight for the vote. Along the way she confronts condescension, hunger, arrest, and the complicated question of whom she may love. This edition presents the complete, unabridged original text, newly introduced and accompanied by reader's notes that illuminate the suffrage movement, the 'New Woman' debates, and the scandal the novel caused in its own day. By turns witty, tender, and quietly radical, Ann Veronica remains one of the most engaging novels ever written about a woman claiming her own mind. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
