Ernest Maltravers by Edward Bulwer Lytton Baron Lytton

Lumley Ferrers returns to London after years abroad, sharp-witted, ambitious, and determined to turn every encounter into advantage. When he unexpectedly meets his wealthy uncle, Mr. Templeton, he quickly sizes up the family's fortunes, the new marriage, and the possibility that his inheritance may be slipping away. Templeton's piety, vanity, and dreams of rank contrast with the emotional unease of his household, where the beautiful, silent Mrs. Templeton mourns over Ernest Maltravers's poetry and seems trapped in a loveless domestic order. Ferrers, masking opportunism as self-improvement, resolves to exploit the household's jealousies and divisions with patience and "conduct" rather than talent. The novel's social world broadens into glittering London, where the heiress Florence Lascelles is paraded as a prize for title and wealth, yet recoils from aristocratic emptiness. Drawn to genius and dissatisfied with convention, she becomes the focus of competing ambitions: the poetic adventurer Castruccio Cesarini, the calculating Ferrers, and the social powers around her. Meanwhile Ernest Maltravers, now publicly successful, is privately worn down by overwork, loneliness, and failing health, forced to confront the cost of ambition and the tragic limits of a mind that strains against mortality.
