The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons (《文心雕龍》 Wén xīn diāo lóng)
Written by Liu Xie (劉勰 Liúxié, c.465‑522), this monumental 50‑chapter work is China’s most systematic ancient treatise of literary criticism. Its title combines *wén xīn* — the inner mind of literary creation — and *diāo lóng*, meaning the exquisite carving of ornate writing, derived from an ancient allusion to master rhetoricians.
Living in the Southern Dynasties, Liu Xie was a scholar‑monk steeped in Confucian classics, Daoist cosmology and Buddhist logic. This is his major surviving work. The book establishes a complete literary system: it traces literature to the cosmic Dao, surveys dozens of literary genres, explores creative imagination (*shensi* 神思), authorial temperament and style (*tixing* 體性), and develops the pivotal aesthetic concept of *feng‑gu* (風骨,wind and bone), balancing emotional force and structural firmness.
Liu Xie evaluates major writers and texts from Qu Yuan, the *Book of Songs*, Han fu rhapsodies down to Jian‑an poetry. He cites numerous historical figures, classical texts and literary anecdotes to illustrate literary principles. For over fifteen centuries it has shaped East Asian poetics, offering enduring frameworks for analysing writing, creativity and aesthetic judgement.
This bilingual English translation by Arthur Peng renders the complete classical text for global readers. It makes accessible a cornerstone of Chinese aesthetic thought, bridging ancient Chinese critical traditions and modern English‑language literary studies.
