Dick Hamilton's Cadet Days by Howard Roger Garis

Dick Hamilton's Cadet Days thrusts the spirited young millionaire from carefree summer camp into the hard discipline of military academy life, where money means nothing and character must be earned. After dazzling his friends with a triple somersault dive, Dick is abruptly summoned home by a telegram from his father and learns that Kentfield Military Academy is waiting for him as part of the terms of his inheritance. With his father preparing to travel abroad, Dick must face a stricter world alone, determined to prove himself on merit rather than privilege. At Kentfield, he meets hostility from Captain Dutton, who spreads lies to keep him off the regular football team and into the scrub lineup. Dick answers unfairness with grit, loyalty, and steady effort, even after Dutton and another cadet cruelly use his bulldog, Grit, in a dogfight. Alongside the football rivalry comes a deeper mystery, when old soldier Captain Handlee asks for Dick's help in finding his long-lost son. As Dick battles winter hardships, tests of horsemanship, and dangerous competitions for the prize troop, the story builds a lively tale of school rivalries, rescue, courage, and friendship under pressure.
