Daddy Takes Us Skating by Howard Roger Garis

Hal and Mab Blake live in a home where winter weather becomes a doorway to wonder, laughter, and science. From hauling flowers indoors before a hard frost to listening as Daddy Blake turns questions about cold, heat, and lightning into memorable lessons, the children's days are filled with curiosity, family warmth, and the comic bustle of their poodle, Roly-Poly. When winter deepens, Daddy Blake reveals the power of freezing water by showing how it can shatter a corked bottle, burst a pipe, and even crack iron. He then surprises the children with ice skates, launching them into a season of outdoor adventure. On the pond and the lake, Daddy Blake teaches them to test the ice, skate safely, and understand why exercise warms the body. A frightening accident when Roly-Poly disappears through thin ice becomes another lesson in caution, leading to a first ice-fishing trip that is as practical as it is exciting. With hot chocolate, pickerel, and a skating race built on fair play, the Blake family's winter is full of discovery, affection, and hands-on learning.
