Dick Hamilton's Steam Yacht by Howard Roger Garis

Dick Hamilton's Steam Yacht sends Howard R. Garis's spirited young millionaire from academy triumph into a sea adventure filled with storms, suspicion, and danger. Fresh from leading Company B at Kentfield Military Academy, Dick enjoys a hard-won victory and a farewell banquet with his loyal friends before a letter from his father draws him home to a new family mystery and the promise of a summer cruise aboard the steam yacht Albatross. His joy is shadowed by the bitter interference of Uncle Ezra Larabee, whose stingy outrage at the expense only sharpens Dick's excitement. Once at sea, Dick, his bulldog Grit, and his companions welcome cheerful cadets, share stories and good food, and dream of island exploration—until a violent storm turns the voyage perilous. When newsboy Tim Muldoon vanishes, Dick fears the worst and searches desperately through the raging weather. Superstitious alarms, a strange cry for help, and a tense rescue reveal that danger is lurking aboard. As the yacht continues toward Cuba, a machinery breakdown and the sudden appearance of a suspicious steamer, the Princess, hint that Ezra's meddling and earlier threats are far from over.
