Buddy and Brighteyes Pigg by Howard Roger Garis

Buddy Pigg and his sister Brighteyes live in a bright, bustling animal world where even the smallest mishaps turn into comic adventures, gentle lessons, and acts of kindness. Buddy's escapades range from climbing inside a cabbage for a nap and getting carried home by accident, to discovering a "turnip" trap, joining a lively baseball game, and winning with a lucky final hit when a fish hawk snatches the ball away. Brighteyes shines in her own charming episodes, helping Mrs. Hoptoad finish making butter, crafting a doll with Sister Sallie from bits of the forest, and showing care and cleverness when trouble or temptation appears. The stories also bring suspense and heart: Buddy is swept away in a runaway boat and rescued by a whole circle of friends, while he and Brighteyes are forced to flee a fox, find a box of candy, and later quietly restore it for a grieving little girl, making her think a fairy helped. From sickbed fears and mysterious nighttime noises to warm homecomings and playful discoveries, these tales celebrate friendship, imagination, and the comforting support of a close-knit woodland community.
