Chetwynd Calverley by William Harrison Ainsworth

Chetwynd Calverley opens in a storm of wounded pride, contested inheritance, and family suspicion, centered on the country house of Ouselcroft. When Mildred greets her estranged brother Chetwynd on his return home, he learns that their father, Mr. Hugh Calverley, is gravely ill and has summoned his attorney to draw up a new will, threatening to redirect the family fortune. Chetwynd's bitterness toward Mrs. Calverley, his anger over the collapse of his engagement to the proud and beautiful Teresa Mildmay, and his resentment of the marriage that followed all sharpen the novel's tense emotional core. Teresa, once Mr. Calverley's ward, proves an unexpectedly capable and devoted wife, but her marriage only deepens the household's complexity. As death nears, Mr. Calverley leaves his estate to Teresa, trusting her to manage the family and promising future provision for Chetwynd and Mildred if they prove deserving. Chetwynd's furious protest, eerie haunting rumors, Mrs. Calverley's guarded engagement to Captain Danvers, and Mildred's heartbreak propel the story into a web of romance, manipulation, and social maneuvering. With the move to London and Rose's mysterious troubles, the novel widens into a melodramatic tale of secret letters, broken promises, and hidden motives.
