John Krenner has escaped from a maximum-security prison with one purpose: to reach Jerome Markson and exact revenge for the ruin of his life. Ruthless, wounded, and driven by decades of hatred, he kills his way out, flees into the river night, and pushes through the wilderness on a grim, single-minded quest. As he moves closer, he intimidates a farm couple into treating his injured foot, stealing their clothes and their silence to keep his pursuit alive. Jerome Markson is forced to relive the nightmare he thought was over when news of Krenner's escape reaches him. The murder of his wife, the long feud, and the old terror come flooding back, and he sends his daughter to safety while hoping the authorities can stop Krenner before he arrives. But Krenner's plan begins to unravel when he learns that Sherman, the man he believed would help him reach Markson, has been captured. Undeterred, he turns to the futuristic Rolling Roads system, adapting his hunt in a relentless chase through a world that has moved on without him.
