Germany, Made by Others: A History of a Nation Shaped by Its Neighbors by Morgan Bentley

Germany was never shaped by Germany alone.

Long before there was a unified Germany, the lands at the heart of Central Europe stood at the crossroads of some of the continent's greatest struggles and transformations. Roman legions pushed against their frontiers. Frankish kings forged new kingdoms. The Holy Roman Empire created a political order unlike any other in Europe. The Reformation divided communities and reshaped the religious map. Napoleon dismantled centuries-old institutions. Industrialization transformed a collection of states into a global power. Two world wars reshaped both Germany and the world before division and reunification opened yet another chapter.

Germany, Made by Others tells the story of a nation through the people, empires, conflicts, and ideas that continually influenced its course. Rather than viewing German history in isolation, this book follows the wider European forces that helped shape one of the world's most influential countries.

Inside, you'll discover:

• How geography placed the German lands at the center of Europe's greatest struggles and opportunities.

• The Roman frontier, the Germanic tribes, and the foundations of a distinct cultural identity.

• Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Empire, and the political experiment that shaped Central Europe for centuries.

• The Reformation and the religious conflicts that permanently altered German society.

• Napoleon Bonaparte's conquest, the collapse of the old order, and the rise of modern nationalism.

• Otto von Bismarck's diplomacy and the remarkable German Unification that transformed the European balance of power.

• The transformation of the new German Empire from a collection of states into an industrial powerhouse.

• The turbulent years of the Weimar Republic and the conditions that led to dictatorship.

• World War II, division during the Cold War, and the long path to reunification.

Written in a clear, documentary-style narrative, Germany, Made by Others connects events across more than two thousand years, showing not only what happened, but why each turning point mattered—and how one era created the conditions for the next.

This is a history of Germany, but it is also a history of Europe. The book reveals how Rome, the Franks, the Holy Roman Empire, France, Austria, Prussia, Napoleon, the great industrial powers, and the rival blocs of the twentieth century all played a part in shaping Germany's extraordinary trajectory.

Whether you're fascinated by the history of Germany, European history, political transformation, war and diplomacy, or the forces that shaped the modern European world, Germany, Made by Others offers a broader perspective on a familiar story.
