Better Dead by James Matthew Barrie

In Better Dead, J. M. Barrie begins with a wry, self-protective preface that explains the book's Scottish origins, his irritation at unauthorized editions, and his gratitude to the editors and publishers who helped bring these Thrums sketches into print. That affectionate, ironic voice carries into the story of Andrew Riach, a brilliant young Scottish idealist whose comic reasoning and genuine tenderness are tested by love, poverty, and ambition. Before leaving home, Andrew awkwardly debates his feelings for Clarrie; in London, he is repeatedly rejected by statesmen and newspapers, then driven into humiliating odd jobs, isolation, and erratic street life. As Andrew's fortunes collapse, he is drawn toward a mysterious older gentleman whose quiet authority leads him into the secretive Society for Doing Without Some People, a grotesquely funny but chilling organization devoted to "practical" morality, political influence, and the elimination of selected lives for the greater good. Barrie turns radical reform, bureaucracy, and social respectability into dark satire as Andrew is ushered into a world of committees, probation, theses, and a sinister machine. The novel blends Scottish local color, romance, and black comedy with a sharp critique of power, poverty, and the dangerous seductions of purpose.
