A Holiday in Bed by James Matthew Barrie

J. M. Barrie's wit turns ordinary life into something sparklingly comic, whether he is lying abed, defending a country manse, or teasing the anxieties of modern health advice. This lively collection brings together humorous essays and sketches that reveal the Scottish author of A Window in Thrums and The Little Minister at his most affectionate, observant, and slyly satirical. Framed by a brief biographical sketch tracing Barrie from Kirriemuir childhood to journalism and early literary success, the volume highlights the places and experiences that shaped his voice and the works that won him admiration after initial rejection. The pieces themselves range from the famous A Holiday in Bed, a playful meditation on convalescence, leisure, domestic comfort, and the art of getting one's own way, to comic reflections on schoolboys, hats, carving, travel, smoking, digestion, and other everyday absurdities. Life in a Country Manse and its companion scenes offer a warm, spirited portrait of rural Scottish life, where Janet, sermons, snow, gossip, and village weddings become sources of both humor and community. Gretna Green Revisited adds the promise of romance, social convention, and wry commentary on marriage. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
