The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave by Mary Prince

First published in 1831, The History of Mary Prince is the stirring testimony of a woman who endured slavery in Bermuda, the Turks Islands, and Antigua-and who risked everything to tell her own story. Dictated by Prince herself after she fled her owners in London, this landmark narrative exposed the brutal realities of bondage to thousands of British readers and helped turn the tide of public opinion in the final years of the abolitionist struggle. This edition presents the complete, unabridged original text, including Thomas Pringle's preface and supplementary materials, together with a new introduction and reader's notes that illuminate the historical context, the fierce controversy the book provoked, and the remarkable woman at its center. Honest, vivid, and deeply moving, Prince's account remains essential reading-a voice from the past that speaks with undiminished power. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
