The Letters of Franklin K. Lane, Personal and Political by Franklin K. Lane

Few public men of the Progressive Era wrote with the warmth and candor of Franklin K. Lane. As Secretary of the Interior under Woodrow Wilson, he fought for conservation, national parks, and the working man — yet it is in his private letters that the full man appears: the devoted brother, the sharp-eyed observer, the restless idealist who could turn a political setback into a wry, luminous paragraph. This edition presents the complete, unabridged text of The Letters of Franklin K. Lane, Personal and Political, exactly as first published in 1922, together with a modern introduction and reader's notes that set each letter in its historical moment. From the campaign trails of California to the corridors of Washington, from the Great War to the peace that followed, Lane's correspondence is a living history — and a pleasure to read.
