Pack Ice Paradise by Amy Hevron

Discover how melting pack ice transforms into an island paradise in this new book in an illuminating nonfiction picture book series that explores how even the smallest habitats play big roles in nature.

Behold! The coldest place on Earth! Where the wind whistles across the wintery seascape, and the ocean is covered in a thick sheet of ice, till the sun returns and melts the ice…and shines light down into the ocean’s depths, creating a pack ice paradise.

It’s time for some fun in the sun in the unlikeliest of places…Antarctica! During the dark winter season on this freezing continent, pack ice covers the ocean. But when summer returns, the sun shines on the ocean’s surface, gradually melting the pack ice and opening passageways into the water. And then the pack ice paradise party begins, attracting all types of life, from tiny phytoplankton and krill to massive orcas and humpback whales—and, of course, penguins, seals, and sea birds galore.

With snappy, funny text and frosty illustrations, this book invites curious readers to explore a tiny habitat that pops up as winter melts into summer.
