Indian Slavery in Colonial Times Within The Present Limits of The United States by Almon Wheeler Lauber

Indian Slavery in Colonial Times Within the Present Limits of the United States is a landmark scholarly exploration of a neglected chapter in American history. Almon Wheeler Lauber presents a deeply researched and compelling examination of the enslavement of Indigenous peoples from the earliest European contact through the colonial era. Drawing on legal records, personal accounts, colonial documents, and regional histories, Lauber illuminates the complex systems of bondage that shaped interactions between colonists and Native nations. This work reveals how Indian slavery influenced settlement patterns, economic development, warfare, cultural exchange, and early American law. Lauber’s careful analysis dismantles misconceptions and brings to light the human stories behind an institution often overshadowed by African slavery in historical narratives. For readers seeking a comprehensive, accurate, and thought-provoking study of Indigenous history and colonial America, this book remains a foundational resource.
