Jerome for Beginners by Leo Eusebius

The Scholar Who Changed Christianity Forever

Between 347 and 420 AD, Jerome gave Western Christianity the Bible it would use for over a thousand years.

Born in Dalmatia, educated in Rome, tested in the Syrian desert—Jerome became the only Latin scholar equipped to create what Pope Damasus I needed: an authoritative Latin Scripture.

This is not a sanitized saint's life. Jerome quarreled with friends, wrote devastating polemics, struggled with temptation, and was driven from Rome by scandal. His personality combined brilliant scholarship with caustic wit, genuine holiness with vindictive pride.

Inside this book:

A Roman student's transformation into a monk learning Hebrew • The decade-long translation (390-405) of the Hebrew Bible into classical Latin • Why his methods sparked accusations of heresy • The theological battles that destroyed friendships and nearly cost his life • How the Vulgate survived Rome's collapse to shape Christianity for sixteen centuries

Drawing on Jerome's letters and contemporary accounts, this biography presents the complete man: linguistic genius, controversial monk, and scholar whose work defined Catholic tradition.

Perfect for readers interested in: Early Church history • Biblical translation • Late Roman Empire • Classical learning and Christian faith

Jerome proved that faith and rigorous scholarship are inseparable. His achievement outlasted the Roman Empire itself.
