Ash And Iron by Thomas Vail

They were hired to hold a town.

Not to win a war.

When the Iron Hollow - sixty veteran mercenaries - accept a contract to defend a forgotten border settlement, they expect hard fighting and decent pay.

What they discover instead is far worse.

The war is already lost.
The town is politically expendable.
And they were never meant to survive.

Outnumbered, undersupplied, and abandoned by the regional command, Captain Kerrin Blackvein and his soldiers face the brutal arithmetic of siege warfare. Every decision costs lives. Every delay weakens morale. Every promise carries consequences.

There are no prophecies here.
No miracles.
No hidden magic waiting to turn the tide.

Only steel, discipline, hunger - and the question of how much honor is worth when survival is on the line.

Ash and Iron is a grounded, character-driven military fantasy about leadership under impossible conditions, the fracture of loyalty, and what remains after everything burns.

For readers who prefer:

•Gritty realism over epic destiny
•Tactical siege warfare
•Mercenary ethics and moral compromise
•Slow-burn collapse instead of heroic victory
•Consequences that don't reset

This is not a story about saving the world.

It's about surviving its failure.
